Welcome to Trayer Wilderness Academy!

My name is Tammy Trayer.  I am the co-founder here at the academy, a radio host at Mountain Woman Radio, blogger at TrayerWilderness.com and author of How To Embrace An Off-Grid Lifestyle, The Trayer Wilderness Cookbook and co-author of Courage Under Siege: Adversity To Victory.  I’ve also had the privilege of writing for Prepare Magazine, The New Pioneer, Survivor’s Edge, Personal and Home Defense, American Frontiersman, Cabin Life, Countryside, Self Reliance Illustrated and Backwoodsman Magazine.

My family and I embraced our off-grid lifestyle in 2010 when we packed up everything we owned and traveled west 2,500 miles to the raw wilderness land that we purchased sight unseen.  We lived in the wall tent below for 8 1/2 months while we built our home and homestead.

We were seeking a freedom, a freedom that we found and wish to share with you.  Not that you have to pick up all you know and begin a life of off-grid living, but that as you live your life you learn the simplicity that we know.  That you also learn skills that will carry you and your family into your future no matter what comes your way.  Living in the wall tent was the most amazing time of my life.  It could not have gotten more simple – I woke to deer and grouse right outside my tent each morning, had dirt under my feet, cooked and ate in the wilderness, worked hard all day building a dream and fell asleep at night listening to coyotes howl not 200 yards away!  It was wild, to say the least, but it was invigorating, romantic in ways and empowering to know we were beating the odds and building a strong life for ourselves.  We not only built a strong life for ourselves, but we created such an incredibly strong family bond that nothing can break.

My book How To Embrace An Off-Grid Lifestyle was the catalyst that led us to Trayer Wilderness Academy. I found in writing the book I just couldn’t teach the skills simply with just words.  We were already recording some in-depth videos and writing small content specific e-books and we decided that this was the perfect time to create our academy which would give us the ability and means to teach you the skills that we feel everyone should have.

In 2016, we put our preparedness skills to the test when I underwent life-saving surgery, was on my back from January until almost July and we went 6 1/2 months without an income.  We never went without food, our house was warm and we had a roof over our head.  We walk the walk and talk the talk – we live a preparedness lifestyle and desire to teach you what we know!

Our academy is designed in such a way that there is something for EVERYONE!  Our Skill Of The Month Membership is for those that want to learn something new every month.  We also have independent classes for those just seeking specific knowledge in specific areas such as my Mountain Man’s trapping or blacksmith classes or my knitting classes.   If you haven’t noticed, we are not all doom and gloom – we just feel it is essential for everyone to think ahead, focus on the future and have the knowledge to carry them through!

As you can see in the graphic above, there will be a lot of materials shared here at Trayer Wilderness Academy and we look forward to being here for you and helping you on your journey for knowledge and a lifestyle of preparedness.
